When I’m visiting a salon, one of the most common conversations I have is around retail — and more specifically, how to make it work without feeling like you’re selling. You know what I mean. That awkward moment when a stylist’s finished the service, the client’s happy, and now there’s that pause — “Should I mention the shampoo? Do they want to buy it? Will it feel pushy?”
The good news is, when retail is done right, it doesn’t feel like selling at all. It becomes part of the client journey — natural, helpful, even expected.
So, here’s something I put together recently for a salon we support. They stock ELEVEN Australia, and were looking for practical ways to improve their retail touchpoints. It’s a full 360 checklist — starting before the client even walks in the door, and finishing well after they’ve left with great hair and a smile.
Retail doesn’t start in the salon. It starts online.
I always encourage salons to think of their window and reception area as silent retailers (they don’t take days off either 😉).
This is where the magic happens. The consultation is your golden opportunity.
When ELEVEN Australia launched, they built the brand around simple language and straight-talking product names — so use that to your advantage. No jargon, just results. As Joey Scandizzo says “Haircare doesn’t need to be complicated, it just needs to work!”
This one’s huge, and often overlooked.
Clients remember how something made them feel — so give them a great sensory experience and the confidence to recreate it themselves.
This is where your products live — and the difference between a shelf that sells and one that just stores is all in the detail.
Your shelf should be a silent service assistant — always ready to support the stylist’s recommendation and make it easy for the client to say yes. I love the retail shelving at Marzipan Hair in Truro

If you’ve done all of the above, checkout is the easiest part.
Don’t forget about the follow-up. A smart aftercare strategy keeps the conversation going.
Retail shouldn’t be a bolt-on to your service — it should be baked into every stage of the client journey.
If your team believe in the products, if they understand the why, and if you build it into your salon flow from start to finish, clients will thank you for the guidance. And yes, they’ll buy more too.
If you’re an ELEVEN Australia salon and want help training your team on this, or even refreshing your displays — just shout. That’s what we’re here for.
The Mocha Mousse hair trend is inspired by Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year, which is a rich, warm brown with a hint of taupe. This shade is designed to evoke feelings of comfort and natural beauty, making it a versatile and universally flattering choice for many people.
Mocha Mousse can be used in different hair colouring techniques, such as all-over colour, highlights, balayage, or ombré styles. It blends well with other palettes and serves as a great base layer for multidimensional looks.
We asked Jo Robertson Wonderful Brands Education Director and Paul Dennison ELEVEN Australia Brand Artists for their interpretation of the trend.

YELLOW Professional are launching a new class to explore the many tones you will be able dive into the brunette shades that will be taking over salons in 2025.
In this class, you’ll discover how to deconstruct the latest Mocha trends and delve into the four key brunette tones. You’ll learn to use the colour wheel to formulate these shades, gaining the confidence to either neutralize or enhance existing tones. By the end of the class, you’ll apply your newfound knowledge to create the four trending tones on a quadrant head.
To book this class speak to your Wonderful Brands Account manager or view the education book here.
Sarah Dalglish from the co-working hair salon REBEL REBEL spoke to us about Managing Clients’ Expectations as a Hairdresser and shared some of her top tips.
As hairdressers, it’s important to remember that most clients don’t understand what goes into creating their dream hair. Thanks to social media, they’ve often been led to believe anything is possible. It’s our job as experts to guide them through the process—but we should always do it with kindness. A little understanding goes a long way in helping clients feel heard and appreciated, even when we have honest conversations about what’s achievable and what isn’t.
We’ve all been there. A client comes in armed with an image or video from Instagram or TikTok, saying they want their hair to look “exactly like that.” While it’s great to have inspiration, these images often create unrealistic expectations.
Sure, sometimes it may be possible to create something similar, but it won’t always look exactly like that picture, especially when they get home.
I’m going to use a lived-in balayage blonde as an example, but the same rules apply to any colour or even haircut.
Most of the pictures you’ll find of balayage are on long, wavy hair, styled perfectly to show off all that dimension. And, of course, they’re taken in fantastic lighting—think natural daylight or the brightest spot in the salon that makes those blonde tones pop (and of course, we all do this with our work as it’s when it looks its best). But that’s not the reality clients will see when they’re standing in their bathroom.
What happens when they go home, wash their hair, and don’t know how to recreate those waves? Add in a room without much natural light and a yellow-toned lightbulb, and suddenly that Instagram blonde doesn’t look quite the same. If we haven’t managed their expectations properly, they might think we haven’t done what they asked, or worse—we aren’t very good at our jobs.
It’s not about shooting down their dreams—it’s about being real with them. Here’s how I do it. I’ll use the blonde balayage again as an example, though this can apply to pretty much any work.
Take the time to sit down face to face with them and really get to grips with what they’re after. Ask questions, dig into what they like, and talk about their lifestyle. It’s about making sure you’re on the same page before you start. This is the moment to discuss what’s achievable, what might take a few sessions, and what simply won’t work with their natural hair.
I was once told that 90% of what goes wrong is in the consultation, and I must admit, it’s something I agree with!
I always ask clients to bring in three images of the type of colour they like. You wouldn’t believe how many times those images end up being totally different from each other! But it’s helpful—it gives me a chance to figure out what they’re actually seeing and which elements they’re drawn to. Plus, it stops them from getting too attached to one specific photo that might be unrealistic for their hair type.
If a client has naturally darker, straight hair but they’re showing me a photo of a lived-in blonde on someone with naturally light, wavy hair, it’s my job to explain how the outcome will look different. I’ll ask them to find photos where the hair type is more like theirs. It gives them a better sense of what they’re likely to end up with, which means fewer surprises when they look in the mirror later.
After we’ve had the consultation, I always go over what we talked about before getting started. For example, if a client’s moving from a full head of highlights to a more lived-in look, they’re going to feel darker than usual. I’ll make sure they know this and are happy with it before I get going. It’s all about making sure there are no surprises when they leave the studio.
Sometimes, even after the best consultation, you might feel that a client’s vision doesn’t align with your style or the kind of work you love to create. Or maybe they’re not listening to what you’re saying about what’s achievable for their hair. And that’s okay. As a hairdresser or colourist, you don’t have to take on every client. It’s perfectly fine to tell them that you don’t feel you’re the right person to create the look they’re after.
It’s better to part ways before any disappointment than to do a service you’re not confident will meet their expectations. This way, they can find someone who’s a better fit for their vision, and you can focus on the work you’re passionate about. It’s about maintaining your integrity as a professional and making sure that both you and the client are happy with the end result.
Managing expectations is all about communication. When clients have a clear idea of what to expect, everyone’s happier in the end—they’re confident in their new look, and you know you’ve done your best work. So, take the time to talk things through, find realistic examples, and help them see how their new style is going to work in real life, not just in a picture.

“Retail is a great way to grow your average bill and your income” says our joint managing director Andy Campling. Here he shares his 11 top tips on merchandising & retail to maximise your sales this Christmas season.
Hot spots! Find the “hot spots” in your salon and place your hero retail products there. Display your best-selling products and minis on the retail desk, think impulse purchases! Brushes are also great here. Look at your retail shelves and make sure products are visible at eye level, easy for clients to pick up and read more about and keep those stock levels up, no one wants to pick up the last tin of beans in the supermarket! Consider your waiting area too and put out leaflets and tester products so clients can start thinking retail before they even get to your chair.
Don’t sell, Recommend and Educate your clients about what products you’re using in their hair and why you’re using them. This builds a positive rapport and trust with your clients, meaning they may not buy from you the first or second time you do their hair, but they probably will on the 3rd or 4th! Consistency and persistence is the key to generating regular sales.
Make your clients famous! Encourage clients to share photos of themselves with their favourite ELEVEN Australia products. Make it a competition, get them to post a pic of themselves with their fresh hair and one of the ELEVEN Australia Trio pack. Have a prize for the best photo (you get your followers to vote on your insta account), it could be an ELEVEN Australia HOLIDAY TRIO or salon service of their choice. User generated content makes your clients feel like they are part of something special and supports word of mouth marketing.
Use data to add value. If you have a salon software programme where you can access each clients purchase history you can be prepared with the best holiday packs for that client, for example Sarah is booked in for her usual cut and colour and she has purchased ELEVEN Australia Smooth Me Now Shampoo and Conditioner in her last few visits, the stylist should have the SMOOTH TRIO at the station to show it to Sarah when she comes in. This shows your client that you know what they like and have taken the time to set it aside for them, the client feels valued that you have thought about them before they have arrived in the salon.
Start a retail chat! During your consultation ask your client what products they are using at home and whether they are happy with them? If they are happy with them, you should still present the appropriate products for their hair that you stock in your salon and say “Unfortunately we don’t stock those products here, but these are the products I will be using on your today.”
Ask your client questions about their hair. If you can get your client to open to you about their hair issues, then you have an open pathway to solve the clients’ issues with the appropriate retail products.
Put a price on it! Clients are often scared to ask the price of products and stylists are equally nervous to say. Putting the price on the products you are using gets over this issue and the client can make up their own mind if they can afford the product. More often than not they will be pleasantly surprised by the price. We also provide pricelists for all our holiday packs so make sure these are not just on your retail shelves but also at styling stations, let the clients see the value!
Go digital & grow sales ↗ To celebrate the launch of our Limited-Edition Australian Landscapes Holiday collection, we have created social media content for you to share on your digital platforms. We also have an EDM (electronic direct mail) and blog you can use to keep your clients up to date on 2024’s hottest Christmas packs. Ask your Wonderful Brands Account Manager to share these assets with you.

Talk to clients about Christmas Presents. Stylists should ask clients if they have Christmas gifts to buy, naturally the answer will be ‘yes’ which gives them the opportunity to suggest the ELEVEN Australia Trio Packs, or maybe a Limited Edition Miracle Hair Treatment. There are so many gifts to buy every year, secret santa at the office, gifts for the kids teachers, something for the postie and that’s before you start to think about the family so if you can make your clients gift shopping easier they will be forever in your debt!
Incentivise your team to sell Christmas packs! We have created a simple incentive sheet for you, for every pack a team member sells they simply write their name on one of the boxes, Once all the boxes are completed play a game of “pin the tail on the donkey” to pick a lucky winner! The more packs they sell the more chances of winning a prize! Ask your rep about incentive prize ideas.
Stylists product of the week. Each week get one of your team to pick their favourite product and then tell all your clients about it! You could place that product on the reception desk with a hand written postcard from the stylist saying why they love this product. A great way to build social media is to get your team talking about their fav products, so a quick vertical film shot on your phone each week with the chosen team member talking about their product of the week is always a winner, not only is great for social engagement it also builds the teams product knowledge as it gets them talking about products. Check out ELEVEN Australia salon Ruby Lane’s Instagram for some great inspo on this.
Have a team retail training session. Its important to keep reviewing what you are doing to grow retail in the salon and no matter how good you are a training session can just kick things up a notch. All of the Wonderful Brands team are able to deliver sessions for your salon but if you don’t have the time to book out the team then I would urge you to watch our recent YouTube Live on RETAIL EXCELLENCE with Mastermynd Beauty, its a packed of top tips and retail inspiration.

Tone-on-Tone Creator transforms permanent colour into demi-permanent hues, effortlessly refreshing tones while preserving hair health.

Tone-on-Tone Creator is a smart additive that, when added to yellow permanent colour, acts by targeting the alkalinity of the colour cream reducing its PH-level and transforming it into a true tone-on tone colour. It also remineralises the hair leaving it strong and healthy.
Adding Tone-On-Tone Creator lowers the pH of the colour and by using 5 vol will only allow the colour to enter into the cuticle and not deep into the cortex.
With YELLOW PROFESSIONAL Tone-on-tone Creator you can turn all the beautiful permanent cream colours in the range into true demi-permanent colours, this means…
-Reduced Inventory and a massive cost saving.
-Broader Range, with just one product you now have a complete range of tone-on-tone colours.
-Matching Shades, for colour refreshes you will always be able to match your permanent formula.
Follow the following mixing ration Colour – Peroxide 5 vol. at 1:2 and follow the following mixing ration Colour – Tone-on-tone Creator at 10:1 (when colouring natural hair add Yellow Tone-on-Tone Creator in an equal quantity to half the quantity of the colour to avoid altering the natural base).

We ask our ELEVEN Australia stylists for their top hair tips to beat the frizz in the heatwave!
Use a leave in conditioner
Using Shampoo and conditioner goes without saying but make sure you use a good leave-in conditioner to your hair care regime, we love ELEVEN Australia Miracle Hair Treatment which has 11 benefits, it will give your hair extra hydration protection, prevent split ends, strengthen, moisturises and contains UVA and UVB filters all in one.
Wear a hat
Just as the sun damages our skin it also causes all sorts of problems for our hair. Not only can the sun cause breakage, split ends and colour fade but it can damage the hairs internal structure too.
If you know you’re going to be in the sun for long periods cover up with a hat and this should be non-negotiable if you colour your hair as the sun will bleach your strands creating a brassy look in a very short amount of time.
Self-care in the sun.
If you know you’re going to be heading outside to relax then make the most of your time.
Shampoo your hair as usual and towel dry it before liberally applying a treatment mask our go-to is the ELEVEN Australia Miracle Hair Mask, comb through, then tie your hair out of the way for the day. This way when you’re ready to rinse at the end of the day your hair will be soft and hydrated beautifully. This will also create a layer of protection from the sun during the day.
Avoid additional heat
The sun is doing enough damage so now is the time to skip the heated appliances. Try leaving your hair to dry naturally and avoid tongs and straighteners when you have prolonged sunshine, they will just cause more damage and dehydration to your hair. This is a perfect time to experiment with cute accessories like claw clips and scrunchies or try using a conditioning smoothing balm, the ELEVEN Australia Frizz Control Shaping Cream has anti-humectant properties and will fight the frizz or amp up the natural texture by using the ELEVEN Australia Sea Salt Texture Spray to help your hairs natural texture look amazing. If you just can’t handle not styling your hair try to skip one step… I.e leave your hair to dry naturally then use straighteners or blowdry with a brush and avoid the straighteners.
Wash your hair properly
If you spend the day in the sea or a pool it’s important you make sure any salt and chlorine is out of your hair as it can continue to cause damage. Rinse your hair thoroughly in warm (not hot!) water then shampoo once Deep Clean Balancing Shampoo shampooing for a second time with a hydrating shampoo, we are obsessed with the new Miracle Hair Treatment Shampoo and Conditioner, it contains hyaluronic acid which hydrates the hair and also has anti humectant properties. It’s important to make sure you squeeze out as much water as possible before applying your conditioner, if the hair is soaking it will just run straight off the hair. If you can gently squeeze extra moisture off with a towel before you apply you’re giving your conditioner more of a chance to do its job.
All hair beauty regimes should start with the ELEVEN Australia Miracle Hair Spray hair Treatment, we may be at the end of the summer season but we should still be thinking about Sun Protection for our hair, don’t be fooled by thinking the UV rays won’t be as intense as late-summer. Your hair colour and condition is still at risk. Just as you do for your skin, protect your hair with Miracle Spray Hair Treatment, it has 11 benefits and will help to protect your expensive brunette or buttery blonde. Apply religiously every time you wash your hair and make sure you cover your hair if you are in the sun for long periods.
Beat the frizz!
Too hot to blow-dry your hair? Explore your natural texture.
Moisture is your friend in the heat, your hair will be on the lookout for moisture during the day and will look frizzy without adding moisture into the hair. The best way to beat the frizz is to use products that are hydration, the new ELEVEN Australia Miracle Hair Treatment Shampoo and Conditioner contains hyaluronic aid which is like giving your hair a glass of water, which is very much needed in this heatwave. It also helps to boost curls and has heat protection added in. To enhance your natural texture apply Keep My Curl Defining Cream generously onto the hair and then using a t-shirt towel squeeze the product into the hair, this will allow the hair to take on the right amount of moisture and not just to the surface of the hair. Try letting your texture air dry or if you are in a rush use a diffuser but remember not to touch the curls while they are drying, it will make them frizzy.
Hydration is Key, if your hair is feeling a little dry, treat it to an intense moisture mask. The ELEVEN Australia Miracle Hair Mask is great for thirsty hair, it will strengthen the hair whilst hydrating. The key to these masks is leaving them on for the right amount of time, if it says 15 minutes don’t cut corners and rinse after 3 minutes. They need time to penetrate into the hair and to do it’s job. Relax, wrap your hair up and enjoy the pamper. Your hair will thank you!
