September saw ELEVEN Australia’s second edu-tainment event of the year in Manchester, where we brought a little of Melbourne sunshine to the North of England (it actually rained but the sun shone inside 😉)
The event was held at the quirky Five Four Studios in Manchester, stylists were greeted with breakfast pastries before entering the bright white cove studio space, where the stylists received their red ELEVEN Australia goodie bags with the brand new Miracle Hair Treatment Shampoo and Conditioner as part of their £200 swag.
The event kicked off by Jo Robertson ELEVEN Australia UK Education Director, with an introduction to the brand and a little teaser of the next event in London with co-creative directors Joey Scandizzo and Andrew O’Toole. Melvin Royce Lane ELEVEN Australia’s Head Of Education and Brand Artists Paul Dennison were first to the stage. Melvin re-created the ELEVEN Australia signature seamless blonde using powder lighteners and ultra high-lift blonde cream colour, whilst Paul talked about real-life in-salon colour and how to change up your client’s colours quickly and keep them loyal to you and your salon.

Everyone was then treated to the Instagramable grazing platter lunch before seeing Jo Dyer ELEVEN Australia Guest Artist from YOKE The Salon in Plymouth dramatic haircut that had everyone in the audience holding their breath! Jo used the ELEVEN Australia Feather razor and took her model’s waist-length hair and transformed it into a cute Wolfe cut. Joining Jo was ELEVEN Australia Brand Ambassador Conor Doyle. Conor brought his unique and entertaining education to re-energise the room and talked about tackling curly hair with colour.
Next up is Sydney To Shoreditch on Tuesday 27th February with another superstar lineup

Bondi to Bristol was ELEVEN Australia’s first edu-tainment event in the UK. The event allowed the ELEVEN Australia community to come together and draw inspiration from some of ELEVEN’s ambassadors in a relaxed environment.
ELEVEN Australia’s UK Education Director Jo Robertson said “We wanted to create an intimate atmosphere, where stylists could get up close to the action and be able to ask questions, we love that people came alone and left as friends. It was such an inspirational day and really enjoyed getting to know our salons and stylists better.”
The event was held at Dixion Road Studios in Bristol, stylists were treated to a bumper £200 goodie bag which included the brand-new and not released Keep My Blonde Toning Spray as well as a yummy lunch and a sweet treat in the afternoon to keep the energy levels up.
The attendees were about to watch a 4 mixture of models which were all coloured using ELEVEN Australia COLOUR, showing the versatility of the range. Melvin showed how to add dimension to an overly lightened blonde using the Liquid Demi Permanent Colour and powder Lighteners and in the afternoon how to create a sunkissed Australian Blonde on a guy using the Ultra high Lift Blondes and Powder Lighteners. Whilst Conor showcased an incredible Copper and in the afternoon how to formulate a beautiful peachy tone to a blonde.
Conor Doyle – ELEVEN Australia Ambassador said “This was such an exciting event to work at, we created colour magic live while sharing and chatting about our unique approach to colour. I can’t wait for the next one ❤️”
Melvin Royce Lane – ELEVEN Australia Head of Education said “This event was incredible, it was so good to get to meet so many of you and to share our ELEVEN Australia brand ethos with you all. I can’t wait for the next one, this time bringing a little bit of Melbourne to Manchester!”

Dive into the captivating world of hairstyling as we recount the highlights from one of Salon International 2023’s masterclasses, featuring none other than the globally acclaimed hairdressing photographer, Andrew O’Toole. The event drew an enthusiastic crowd of hairstylists, photographers, and creative professionals hailing from diverse corners of the globe.
The masterclass commenced with a gracious welcome from Ken Picton, setting the stage for an enlightening and groundbreaking experience. He portrayed Andrew O’Toole not only as a master of hairdressing photography but also as a trailblazer in the industry. Ken underscored the significance of O’Toole’s collaborative approach, seamlessly blending elements of hair, makeup, styling, and photography.
A standout moment from Andrew O’Toole’s masterclass was his call for attendees to “be a unicorn.” This concept came to life through a visually striking collection that not only caught the eye but became a reference point for mood boards. O’Toole generously unraveled the secrets behind his most iconic shoots, divulging the creative processes and techniques that set them apart.

The masterclass delved into the practicalities of photoshoots, including the often daunting topic of budgeting. O’Toole provided a meticulous breakdown of shoot-related costs, spanning the photographer, model, stylist, makeup artist, studio, lighting, retouching, and even catering. Attendees gained invaluable insights into navigating these financial aspects, with tips on cost reduction for those embarking on their photography journey.
In a live demonstration during the event, Andrew orchestrated four quick shoots alongside ELEVEN Australia Ambassador Melvin Royce Lane. The emphasis on “pre-work as the magic work” resonated, highlighting the importance of thorough preparation for a seamless and beautiful shoot. O’Toole also outlined a timeline for the preparation process, starting a year in advance with idea collection and culminating two weeks before the shoot in presenting key images to the client.
The masterclass didn’t stop at the technicalities; O’Toole shared tips on creating effective mood boards, using Errol Douglas MBE’s board for the British Hairdressing Awards shoot as a prime example. The emphasis on organization as a key to staying true to your vision was a recurring theme.
Andrew O’Toole urged attendees to seek inspiration beyond the obvious sources, encouraging the creation of something truly unique. Nature, clothing patterns, and even unconventional subjects like butterflies were suggested as wellsprings for incredible and unexpected color combinations.

As the session concluded, attendees walked away armed with insights on crafting collections that are not just original but unforgettable. For those aiming to elevate their photography game, this masterclass proved to be a treasure trove of knowledge. O’Toole generously shared secrets and techniques amassed over 25 years of collaboration with the world’s most awarded hairdressers. In his parting words, he affirmed, “If you can cut hair, straighten hair, curl hair…then you are capable of winning awards.”

In Conversation with Charlotte Evans – Ginger Salon, Bromsgrove. Talking about cost of living, gaining new clients and the environment.
Education Education Education!
Our guests need to know why they should be coming in for regular colour top-ups, and it’s our job as their stylist to pass our professional knowledge on!
Recently we posted an educational Instagram post called ‘The cycle of a Balayage’ Where we covered the maintenance and the cost our guests can expect over the course of a year. This was our most successful educational post and we became inundated with guest queries and bookings for Balayage!
I understand why our industry do it, for years we have been undervalued by society.
I am sure many of us remember the sheer disrespect from school careers advisers “You aren’t very academic, have you considered Hair and Beauty?”…. Rude.
This leads us to undervalue ourselves and very often price our services with emotion “I feel bad charging that” “My clients cant afford that” or worse, we base our prices on competitors, without knowing their overheads.
My salon is the most expensive in the area, and yes I know some people cannot afford us, and Tha’ts ok. This makes room for our ‘Fans’ who are fiercely loyal.
Adding value to a guests service is extremely important, Knowing your Customer journey inside -out, having great quality coffee, an easy, transparent booking system and epic customer service all sets you apart from the competition.
So very often a guests decision to sit in your chair, isn’t based on price.
That being said, we understand the current climate has been difficult for most. Unless you are Jeff Bezos!
We have a few budget friendly options, such as a reduced rate for on the day walk-ins to fill white space. Model nights and a tiered pricing structure so that guests have a degree of control over their spend.
I personally feel If guests see their regular service constantly on offer they will begrudge paying full price.
Yes, we recently started offering express colour services to our Guests. This includes ‘Express Roots’ this covers the parting only, and a blast dry with an assistant. This is available to regular Guests and can only be booked by the stylist if suitable. This is great for emergency grey coverage for a job interview that has caught you off guard! Another popular service is
‘Face frame’ This is great for those guests who want their blonde Poppin!
We don’t break down the colour services, as sometimes we feel this limits us in the long run. As creatives I believe we should have a certain amount of both control and freedom. Recently I separated the price of a toner and now very often guests ask not to have one.
I do feel that having extras is super important though. Adding a treatment to a guests service, or upselling from a Blow-Dry to a Cut and Finish can add thousands to your profit margin per year!
Get Creative!
To stand out from the crowd you need to discover your USP (Unique selling point). Ask yourself why your guests come to you, and if you don’t know ask them! How do you make them feel? why are you different? Once you have this information, you have your avatar. Give her a name, a job, hobbies and interests.
This is where you should concentrate most of your efforts. If your avatar is a Mum, team up with a Mum group on Facebook. If your avatar is a student, get yourself the local university and collaborate on an Event!
Tag your colour house and demo your products. Eleven is a colourists dream, they support everyone, not just stylists with a big following!
Like all colour services, it should start with a Thorough consultation.
Here we dive into the nitty gritty of the hair history, guests desires and above else managing expectations.
Using concise and simple terminology can you get the very best out of your guest.
Strand tests are a Must, this avoids any nasty surprises on the day!
We switched to Eleven Australia last year and clients rave about the shine, condition and longevity of their colour.
Eleven bleach lifts clean whilst keeping the integrity of the hair in tact.
My summer tip for Guests is to massage MIRACLE HAIR TREATMENT through the ends of their hair whilst on the beach for that ultimate summer protection!!
I feel that we all have our part to play in saving the environment. Small changes make a huge difference. Whether that be eating less meat, or buying your clothes from Vinted. (My own personal pledge this year) .
Eleven Australia has a huge part to play in our mission. All packaging is recyclable and made from Recycled materials. They even have plastic free shampoo and conditioner bars! Their ingredients are naturally derived, vegan an cruelty free….. What’s not to Love?
Check out the story in Hairdresser’s Journal!
Emily in Paris is growing up and heading into season 4. We have seen that Lily Collins is moving away from the girlish waves and becoming braver with her haircuts, first there was the chic French Fringe and now we have spotted a new addition the “French Step”.
This versatile trend has been around since 2021 and has been going through a few transitions, we first saw it as “The Hime” or “Princess Cut” and in 2021 it became an iconic look racking up 60 million views on TikTok. The haircut was named after noblewomen back in the Herian period in Japanese history, 794 to 1185. The hair cut was given to young women as a celebration of coming of age in a ceremony called Binsogi . It is a combination of two haircuts, longer at the back and shorter sharp lines at the front. The haircut gathered pace after lockdown and throughout history you are able to see that after key moments in history new haircuts are born. This one in particular was a rebellion haircut with people taking back power of their identity, showing their strength and resilience through a haircut.
We are loving the “French Step” on Lily Collins, it has added so much interest to her hair and given so many options when styling. We particularly love how it takes a boring ponytail to a new level of chic. The haircut can be personalised to suit any face shape, it can help to accentuate cheekbones or worn longer to soften a square shaped face. This haircut is so much fun and love that it is bringing clients back into salons for interesting haircuts.
ELEVEN Australia have introduced 2 cutting classes in the Undertone Collection, the classes will allow you to confidently create versions of this upcoming trend. Co-Creative Director and Co-Founder of ELEVEN Australia Joey Scandizzo said “The beauty of subtlety and the power of restraint. Clean lines with purpose, small silhouettes and fresh understated tones bring to life the UNDERTONE Collection. This collection explores four modern haircuts with finished styling. Working with classic fade barbering techniques and a stepped out cool bob with a square fringe, understated disconnections, and texturising techniques. The looks are versatile, lived-in, and very wearable. While each look can be transformative, these cuts and styles can be adapted to suit the individual needs of any client”.

What a weekend!
ELEVEN Australia has just spent the weekend at Salon International. If you did not manage to catch up with us a Salon International this weekend don’t fear we will share everything that you missed for this action-packed weekend.
This year ELEVEN Australia COLOUR was at the Hairdressers Journal Colour stage area for 3 days, sharing inspiration, colour formulas, techniques and our newly launched Permanent Colour.
Read more to discover who was on stage and learn about the beautiful colour work they produced.
Kicking off the weekend on the Saturday were our amazing ELEVEN Australia Educators Josh Lee, Zoe Rees and Pam Cooney.
First up was Josh Lee, an ELEVEN Australia Educator from Cardiff sharing his foilage technique and creating a beautiful lived-in blonde using 9 Levels Lightener with 6% / 20 Vol and toned with 9VM / 9.35 + 2% activator.

Next up was Zoe Rees ELEVEN Australia Educator from Bliss Hair Therapy Birmingham who created the most beautiful blonde without using a lightener.
This soft, beige blonde was created using our NEW Ultra High Lift Blonde in the ELEVEN Australia Permanent range – 11.20 / 11.VA + 30 Vol / 9%. Zoe also added in some foils for depth using 7NG / 7.03 + 2% in the liquid Demi Permanent range. There was no root tap or toner used to create the look. Zoe added that sometimes as colourists we are far too quick to reach for the powder lighter, using the ELEVEN Australia Ultra High Lift blondes you can achieve the results and it is a really nice alternative to lift and tone.

The final ELEVEN Australia Educator of the day was Pam Cooney from Clay Salon in Birmingham, Pam stole the afternoon at the show with this breathtaking Copper using the ELEVEN Australia Permanent range. The kaleidoscope of copper seamlessly blended into beautiful pale butterscotch which revealed hidden copper gems as it moved.

Pam started the process by mapping out her colour placement by analysing the natural base and sectioning the hair to allow her to transition from one tone to another easily.
Global root application 6.4 / 6.C & 6% 20 Vol
Colour blocking in the nape of the neck, 6.4 / 6C + 6% /20 Vol
Ocipital Bone to below the crown 6.4 / 6C + Orange Concentrate + 6% / 20 vol
Crown 6.4 / 6C + Gold Concentrate + 6% / 20 Vol
Top of the head 7.44 / 7CC + Orange concentrate + 9% / 30 Vol
FaceFrame 8.56 / 8.MR + 9.34 / 9.GC + 12Vol / 40 Vol
Traditionally THE day at salon International! We were ready with a fantastic line-up of Educators and Guest Artists. Joining us on the pod to share her wisdom with the visitors was Katie Groves, our first ELEVEN Australia educator and all-around colour guru.
Sharing their inspiration first was Douglas Reid from R&R Southport, who really does not need an introduction, Dougie has been educating for the brand for 1 year now and consistently shared his inspiration and colour formulas on social media. Dougie’s first model was a beautiful Aussie-inspired blonde using the Ultra High Lift Blondes. Dougie wanted to create a try lived-in blonde that looked like his model had his hair naturally lightened by the sun and salt water of Australia.
His Formula was 11.VA / 11.21 + 12% / 40Vol

Dougie’s second look was far from a lived-in Blonde, this look was inspired by the ELEVEN Australia cutting collection – Undertone which Dougie cut before the show. The hair was pre-lightened using 7 Levels of Lift global application + 6% / 20 Vol and Glossed using the Demi-Permanent Liquid colours 10 VA / 10. 21 & 9. AA / 9.11 + 4% / 13 Vol. Using a very careful and slightly nerve-racking tipping technique LIVE at salon international he tipped with 1.N / 1.0 + 3% / 10 Vol. This certainly was a crowd puller and had everyone holding their breath whilst is was being rinsed off!

Our first guest artist was Charlotte Roberts from Layered Collective on the Wirral. Charlotte shared an alternative to a balayage with a brunette, she shared that her model constantly struggles with the unwanted warmth when getting her hair coloured and that the Liquid Demi Permanent range was the perfect colour as she was able to control the undercoat using the 2% activator and using the newly launched 6MT & 6A to control the top and top and used the 4GM / 4.35 on the underneath sections to add the chocolate tones. Late on in the day, Charlotte created a second look using our 9 levels lightener + 6% / 20 Vol with her go-to face frame section technique.

We were super excited to have the amazing Emma Simmons on our pod as a guest artist the weekend. Emma is a BHA finalist for North-Eastern Hairdresser of the Year and brought 3 of her wigs from her collection to the show which were coloured with ELEVEN Australia permanent COLOUR, which was showcased on the Colour Pod and also on stage during her presentation.
Emma’s first model, Ethan was 11 VN + 12% and triangular sections of 11VA + 12% to create a natural blonde without using lightener.
Her second model Grace who also featured in Emma’s collection was a more technical colour placement
Foils – 20g 9VM + 1g 6RR & 8V and 8A equal parts. With a global application 1 part 5VV and 2 parts 5AA + 8 parts clear with 2%

This is an exciting day at Salon International as it welcomes thousands of students through the doors as well as salons and stylists. It is great to get the opportunity to inspire the future of our industry.
First up on the Colour pod was Ben Nott who wowed us with his perfect Foilage technique and tip out showing how to overcome the dreaded box dye situation.

He first added in a face-frame technique with a mixture of small and chunky weaves with 7 Levels of Lift powder lightener + 10 Vol / 3% with a freehand tip out and freehand balayage using the 6 Levels lay Powder lightener + a scoup of 9 Levels Powder Lightener to boost the lifting capabilities 3:1 + 12% / 40 Vol. Ben had all the visitors watching swooning over his beautiful placement and his perfectionism.
He later transformed the same model using the new ELEVEN Australia Permanent colour, he used around the hairline/face frame – Root 6.43 / 6.CG + 7.44 . 7.CC + 6% / 20 Vol and glosses the ends with 9.33 /9GG + 9.4 / 9.C + 4% / 13 Vol the rest of the hair – roots 6.43 + 7.44 and glossed with 7CC + 9CC + 4% / 13 Vol.

The incredibly talented Annabelle Arnold was in the hot seat next with her first model. Coming from a sizzling summer where bright blondes were the must-have colour of the season and now transitioning to a more muted blonde, Annabelle showed how to easily transform your bright blondes to a more Autumn palette without them feeling too dark.
First Annabelle applied a root colour using the Liquid demi Permanent range 2/3 7GM/ 7.35 + 1/3 6MT / 6.7 + 2%, then lowlighted with ½ 8GA / 8.31 + ½ 7. GM / 7.35 + 4%. Glossed with 2/3 10GA / 10.31 + 1/3 10G + 10GM / 10.35 +2%.

Mixing it up with her second model Annabelle wanted to show how to add colour to her model subtly. His natural base was a level 5 and did not want to look blonde, the desired result was to look like he had been surfing this summer and to add a natural sun-kissed effect. Annabelle applied scattered foils with a concentration at the front to create the sun-kissed effect and used 8.GR / 8.36 + 12% 40Vol.
