Sarah Dalglish from the co-working hair salon REBEL REBEL spoke to us about Managing Clients’ Expectations as a Hairdresser and shared some of her top tips.

As hairdressers, it’s important to remember that most clients don’t understand what goes into creating their dream hair. Thanks to social media, they’ve often been led to believe anything is possible. It’s our job as experts to guide them through the process—but we should always do it with kindness. A little understanding goes a long way in helping clients feel heard and appreciated, even when we have honest conversations about what’s achievable and what isn’t.

We’ve all been there. A client comes in armed with an image or video from Instagram or TikTok, saying they want their hair to look “exactly like that.” While it’s great to have inspiration, these images often create unrealistic expectations.

Sure, sometimes it may be possible to create something similar, but it won’t always look exactly like that picture, especially when they get home.

I’m going to use a lived-in balayage blonde as an example, but the same rules apply to any colour or even haircut.

Social Media and Filters

Most of the pictures you’ll find of balayage are on long, wavy hair, styled perfectly to show off all that dimension. And, of course, they’re taken in fantastic lighting—think natural daylight or the brightest spot in the salon that makes those blonde tones pop (and of course, we all do this with our work as it’s when it looks its best). But that’s not the reality clients will see when they’re standing in their bathroom.

What happens when they go home, wash their hair, and don’t know how to recreate those waves? Add in a room without much natural light and a yellow-toned lightbulb, and suddenly that Instagram blonde doesn’t look quite the same. If we haven’t managed their expectations properly, they might think we haven’t done what they asked, or worse—we aren’t very good at our jobs.

Tips for Managing Clients’ Expectations

It’s not about shooting down their dreams—it’s about being real with them. Here’s how I do it. I’ll use the blonde balayage again as an example, though this can apply to pretty much any work.

1. Have an In-depth Consultation

Take the time to sit down face to face with them and really get to grips with what they’re after. Ask questions, dig into what they like, and talk about their lifestyle. It’s about making sure you’re on the same page before you start. This is the moment to discuss what’s achievable, what might take a few sessions, and what simply won’t work with their natural hair.

I was once told that 90% of what goes wrong is in the consultation, and I must admit, it’s something I agree with!

2. Ask for Three Inspiration Images

I always ask clients to bring in three images of the type of colour they like. You wouldn’t believe how many times those images end up being totally different from each other! But it’s helpful—it gives me a chance to figure out what they’re actually seeing and which elements they’re drawn to. Plus, it stops them from getting too attached to one specific photo that might be unrealistic for their hair type.

3. Find a Picture that’s Similar to Their Hair

If a client has naturally darker, straight hair but they’re showing me a photo of a lived-in blonde on someone with naturally light, wavy hair, it’s my job to explain how the outcome will look different. I’ll ask them to find photos where the hair type is more like theirs. It gives them a better sense of what they’re likely to end up with, which means fewer surprises when they look in the mirror later.

4. Reiterate Key Points from the Consultation

After we’ve had the consultation, I always go over what we talked about before getting started. For example, if a client’s moving from a full head of highlights to a more lived-in look, they’re going to feel darker than usual. I’ll make sure they know this and are happy with it before I get going. It’s all about making sure there are no surprises when they leave the studio.

5. Know When to Say “No”

Sometimes, even after the best consultation, you might feel that a client’s vision doesn’t align with your style or the kind of work you love to create. Or maybe they’re not listening to what you’re saying about what’s achievable for their hair. And that’s okay. As a hairdresser or colourist, you don’t have to take on every client. It’s perfectly fine to tell them that you don’t feel you’re the right person to create the look they’re after.

It’s better to part ways before any disappointment than to do a service you’re not confident will meet their expectations. This way, they can find someone who’s a better fit for their vision, and you can focus on the work you’re passionate about. It’s about maintaining your integrity as a professional and making sure that both you and the client are happy with the end result.

Sarah’s Conclusion

Managing expectations is all about communication. When clients have a clear idea of what to expect, everyone’s happier in the end—they’re confident in their new look, and you know you’ve done your best work. So, take the time to talk things through, find realistic examples, and help them see how their new style is going to work in real life, not just in a picture.

“Retail is a great way to grow your average bill and your income” says our joint managing director Andy Campling. Here he shares  his 11 top tips on merchandising & retail to maximise your sales this Christmas season.

Hot spots! Find the “hot spots” in your salon and place your hero retail products there. Display your best-selling products and minis on the retail desk, think impulse purchases! Brushes are also great here. Look at your retail shelves and make sure products are visible at eye level, easy for clients to pick up and read more about and keep those stock levels up, no one wants to pick up the last tin of beans in the supermarket! Consider your waiting area too and put out leaflets and tester products so clients can start thinking retail before they even get to your chair.

Don’t sell, Recommend and Educate your clients about what products you’re using in their hair and why you’re using them. This builds a positive rapport and trust with your clients, meaning they may not buy from you the first or second time you do their hair, but they probably will on the 3rd or 4th! Consistency and persistence is the key to generating regular sales.

Make your clients famous! Encourage clients to share photos of themselves with their favourite ELEVEN Australia products.  Make it a competition, get them to post a pic of themselves with their fresh hair and one of the ELEVEN Australia Trio pack. Have a prize for the best photo (you get your followers to vote on your insta account), it could be an ELEVEN Australia HOLIDAY TRIO or salon service of their choice. User  generated content makes your clients feel like they are part of something special and supports word of mouth marketing.

Use data to add value. If you have a salon software programme where you can access each clients purchase history you can be prepared with the best holiday packs for that client, for example Sarah is booked in for her usual cut and colour and she has purchased ELEVEN Australia Smooth Me Now Shampoo and Conditioner in her last  few visits, the stylist should have the SMOOTH TRIO at the station to  show it to Sarah when she comes in. This shows your client that you know what they like and have taken the time to set it aside for them, the client feels valued that you have thought about them before they have arrived in the salon.

Start a retail chat! During your consultation ask your client what products they are using at home and whether they are happy with them? If they are happy with them, you should still present the appropriate products for their hair that you stock in your salon and say “Unfortunately we don’t stock those products here, but these are the products I will be using on your today.”
Ask your client questions about their hair. If you can get your client to open to you about their hair issues, then you have an open pathway to solve the clients’ issues with the appropriate retail products.

Put a price on it! Clients are often scared to ask the price of products and stylists are equally nervous to say. Putting the price on the products you are using gets over this issue and the client can make up their own mind if they can afford the product. More often than not they will be pleasantly surprised by the price. We also provide pricelists for all our holiday packs so make sure these are not just on your retail shelves but also at styling stations, let the clients see the value!

Go digital & grow sales ↗ To celebrate the launch of our Limited-Edition Australian Landscapes Holiday collection, we have created social media content for you to share on your digital platforms. We also have an EDM (electronic direct mail) and blog you can use to keep your clients up to date on 2024’s hottest Christmas packs. Ask your Wonderful Brands Account Manager to share these assets with you.

Talk to clients about Christmas Presents. Stylists should ask clients if they have Christmas gifts to buy, naturally the answer will be ‘yes’ which gives them the opportunity to suggest the ELEVEN Australia Trio Packs, or maybe a Limited Edition Miracle Hair Treatment. There are so many gifts to buy every year, secret santa at the office, gifts for the kids teachers, something for the postie and that’s before you start to think about the family so if you can make your clients gift shopping easier they will be forever in your debt!

Incentivise your team to sell Christmas packs! We have created a simple incentive sheet for you, for every pack a team member sells they simply write their name on one of the boxes, Once all the boxes are completed play a game of “pin the tail on the donkey” to pick a lucky winner! The more packs they sell the more chances of winning a prize! Ask your rep about incentive prize ideas.

Stylists product of the week. Each week get one of your team to pick their favourite product and then tell all your clients about it! You could place that product on the reception desk with a hand written postcard from the stylist saying why they love this product. A great way to build social media is to get your team talking about their fav products, so a quick vertical film shot on your phone each week with the chosen team member talking about their product of the week is always a winner, not only is great for social engagement it also builds the teams product knowledge as it gets them talking about products. Check out ELEVEN Australia salon Ruby Lane’s Instagram for some great inspo on this.

Have a team retail training session. Its important to keep reviewing what you are doing to grow retail in the salon and no matter how good you are a training session can just kick things up a notch. All of the Wonderful Brands team are able to deliver sessions for your salon but if you don’t have the time to book out the team then I would urge you to watch our recent YouTube Live on RETAIL EXCELLENCE with Mastermynd Beauty, its a packed of top tips and retail inspiration.

ELEVEN AUSTRALIA partner with ROLF EKROTH for SS 25 COLLECTION “LAVATANSSIT” at COPENHAGEN FASHION WEEK.

With a vibrant history of working with fashion designers across the globe, our ELEVEN Australia team were excited for our very first Copenhagen Fashion Week in partnership with Rolf Ekroth. As a leader in this season’s CPHFW NEW TALENT program – a scheme that nurtures notable upcoming Nordic talent – Rolf Ekroth positioned itself as one to watch. The collection, inspired by the Finnish designer’s personal experiences at Lavatanssit – alike to an old-school open-air barn dance event – is a playful nod to the founder’s upbringing. A love letter to summer nights spent at Finnish dance pavilions scattered across the Finnish countryside.

ROLF EKROTH is an independent Finnish fashion label that champions utilitarianism, nostalgia, and the power of sustainably produced clothes. Values we share at ELEVEN Australia, making this partnership the perfect fit.

The Spring/Summer 25 collection “Lavatanssit” reimagines traditional dance attire with a contemporary edge, merging hand-painted floral prints and innovative silhouettes. Tailored suits offer a modern take on relaxed elegance with sleek lines and subtle details.

Flowing dresses in airy fabrics, capture the romance of a lakeside dance. From mood-board concepts to models on the runway – our ELEVEN Australia Hair Team led by Hair Director Melvin Royce Lane brought Ekroth’s vision to life with a modern, youthful ‘wet look’ inspired hairstyle.

For this hair look Melvin and our ELEVEN Australia team applied products directly to the roots and then through to the ends. Starting with Miracle Hair Treatment and Sea Salt Texture Spray to create texture and piece-y definition. Then Smooth & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum was worked in to add a sleek shine, followed by Make Me Shine Spray Gloss to create a glossy wet-like finish.

Glossing treatments offer numerous benefits for clients, enhancing their hair with beautiful shine and vibrant tones. Here’s a deeper look into why glossing might be the perfect choice for your clients:

1. Low-Commitment Color: Glossing allows clients to experiment with new tones without long-term commitment. It’s an excellent option for refreshing existing colours or trying out new shades, making it a versatile choice for those who like to change their look frequently.

2. Enhances Shine: A gloss treatment coats the outer layer of the hair, adding a beautiful shine that makes hair look healthier and more vibrant. This can be particularly beneficial for hair that looks dull or lifeless.

3. Gentle on Hair: Unlike traditional dyes, glossing treatments typically use a low percentage of peroxide, which means they are gentler on the hair. They sit within the cuticle without shifting the natural hair colour, reducing the risk of damage.

4. Frequency of Treatment: The longevity of a gloss treatment can vary depending on hair texture and porosity. Generally, a gloss can last up to 20 washes, making it a practical and manageable option for maintaining beautiful hair between salon visits.

How Glossing Treatments Work
A gloss treatment works by coating the hair’s outer layer, providing not only a stunning shine but also a subtle tone enhancement. This process involves a low percentage of peroxide, ensuring that the treatment is gentle on the hair cuticle and preserves the natural hair colour.

The Popularity of Glossed Hair
The trend of glossed hair has surged, partly due to the influence of the Aussie trend of lived-in blondes. This trend emphasises a natural, sun-kissed look, reminiscent of stepping off Bondi Beach, with subtle, lived-in tones. This approach to colouring has introduced the concept of low-commitment color to a broader audience, making glossing a popular choice.

Attracting New Clients with Glossing Treatments
Glossing treatments can be a powerful tool to attract new clients to your salon. One major concern for clients considering hair colour is the potential for damage. Glossing addresses this fear by offering a no-commitment colour option that is gentle on the hair. Additionally, the current trend of “glass hair” – hair that is exceptionally shiny and smooth – can be achieved with clear gloss treatments, appealing to clients who desire a sleek, polished look without adding colour.

Pitching Glossing Treatments to Existing Clients
To pitch a glossing treatment to an existing client, emphasise the versatility and low-commitment nature of the service. Suggest a seasonal tone refresh, such as warmer coppers in the winter or beige blondes in the summer, to keep their look updated and exciting. Highlight how these subtle changes can make a big difference, ensuring they return to your salon regularly for these easy, impactful updates.

ELEVEN Australia Captures Timeless Beauty: Campaign Shoot at The ESTATE

Our latest ELEVEN Australia Campaign set against the backdrop of the historic and timeless location of Ripponlea Estate, is the perfect fusion of Australian heritage, old Hollywood charm and contemporary hairstyles of today. The campaign features just two models and how to achieve different hair looks, textures, styles and colour by using the right product.

The ESTATE location captures the timeless beauty of the late 1800’s Victorian era with elegance and charm

Set amidst magnificent gardens and nestled in the heart of Melbourne Australia, The ESTATE location captures the timeless beauty of the late 1800’s Victorian era with elegance and charm.

With its lush greenery, the light filled glass conservatory in the corner of the mansion takes centre stage for the campaign, while the 1930’s remodelled ballroom, drawing and sitting rooms overlook the pool and tennis court reflecting the owner of the times’ love for old Hollywood style. Moving to the Master Bedroom, with its pink carpet, curtains, and blue walls, the campaign takes on a different look and feel again that is reflective of the changes that took place at The ESTATE in the 1950’s.

“I loved doing the hair on this campaign.” says ELEVEN Australia Co-Creative Director Joey Scandizzo.
“While the location had such nostalgia and rich history, I wanted to create contrast by keeping the hair modern and undone but with subtle nods to the old Hollywood glamour and 50’s charm that was reminiscent of The ESTATE.”

While all the styling range in ELEVEN Australia is lightweight and high performing, the key products of choice on The ESTATE location shoot were DRY FINISH WAX SPRAY and DRY FINISH TEXTURE SPRAY to ensure the hair remained lived-in, textured and healthy.

When the looks called for more glamour, Joey’s product of choice was GIVE HOLD FLEXIBLE HAIRSPRAY. The perfect on-set product that allows you to build up a strong hold in the hair with each spray, but then can be effortlessly brushed out to create a new look Cue ELEVEN Australia’s STYLING BRUSH, the ultimate everyday hairbrush and smoothing tool, made from a combination of cruelty-free natural bristles and quality nylon.

While hair styling is often the hero on ELEVEN Australia shoots, showcasing the perfect blonde with ELEVEN Australia Colour was The ESTATE campaign standout.

“Working on a blonde model for this campaign really allowed me to highlight how incredible our blonde portfolio is. The results are clean, and the hair feels so shiny and healthy. As a bonus we got to use the new KEEP MY COLOUR BLONDE TONING SPRAY on set. I love the versatility of this product, use it to tone the hair globally, or target tone a specific area. Formulated with a thermal protection and high performing ingredients, such as Argan & Marula Oil, it’s my go-to product for blondes to keep their hair feeling hydrated and healthy!” says ELEVEN Australia Colour Brand Ambassador & Australian Colourist of the Year Rachel Vitullo.

While most of The ESTATE shoot features the beautiful Australian natural light, campaign photographer and ELEVEN Australia Co-Creative Director, Andrew O’Toole ,was also able to capture beautiful golden light that we offset by the mansion’s interior of bronze coloured plaster ceilings and decorative cornices.

“I love playing with light, making colours richer to create a mood, and The ESTATE allowed me to explore this in spades.” says Andrew.

Well we believe you & your clients really should, read on and we’ll let you know some of the reasons why?

We also think this question is a great way to grow your salon retail and encourage conversations about aftercare with your clients.

Asking clients if they double shampoo can help you as a hairdressers to grow your retail sales for a few reasons:

  • It’s an Education Opportunity: opening up a conversation about hair care routines and the benefits of double shampooing, such as more thorough cleansing and product effectiveness. This dialogue educates the client on the importance of using the right products for their hair type and needs .
  • Product Recommendation: After discussing hair care routines, you the hairdresser can recommend specific shampoos (and conditioner, treatment, styling & finishing products) tailored to the client’s hair concerns. This personalisation makes the recommendation more compelling for the client.
  • Building Trust and Expertise: By offering valuable advice, you can establish yourself as an expert in hair care, which can lead to increased trust from your client. That level of trust can translate into clients being more open to purchasing recommended products, rebooking, adding new services like treatments and changing up their style. They also become raving fans and more likely to recommend friends to use you.
  • Highlighting the Benefits of Professional Products: The discussion can also highlight the benefits of professional hair care products over supermarket brands, potentially encouraging clients to purchase higher-quality items from the salon .

Double shampooing is more than just a trend; it’s a method that promises to transform your hair care routine. OK, so here are 5 reasons we believe DOUBLE SHAMPOOING is so important…

  • Deep Cleansing: The first round of shampooing targets surface dirt, oil, and product build-up, effectively removing these initial layers of grime. This allows the second shampooing to penetrate deeper, ensuring a thorough cleanse right down to the scalp. We always recommend ELEVEN Australia’s DEEP CLEAN CLARIFYING SHAMPOO or GENTLE CLEAN BALANCING SHAMPOO as the first cleanse.
  • Enhanced Scalp Health: A clean scalp is the foundation of healthy hair growth. Double shampooing can help prevent the accumulation of sebum and residue, promoting a healthier scalp environment for the hair.
  • Improved Product Efficacy: The second shampooing isn’t just about cleansing; it’s also about preparing the hair to better absorb conditioners and treatments that follow. With the hair cuticles open post-cleanse, products can penetrate more effectively, enhancing their benefits. The second shampoo is also your chance to deal with hair concerns whether that’s HYDRATION, VOLUME, SMOOTHING. REPAIR or TONING.
  • Volume and Texture: For those looking to add volume to their hair, double shampooing can make a noticeable difference. By thoroughly cleansing the hair, it can appear fuller and thicker, as there’s no residue weighing it down.
  • Misconceptions Debunked: Concerns about hair loss from double shampooing are unfounded. When done correctly, this method does not cause hair loss but instead leaves your locks more vibrant and healthy-looking.

Incorporating double shampooing into your hair care routine can unveil the full potential of your hair and scalp health. Remember, the key is to choose the right type of shampoo that suits your hair type and condition to avoid dryness or damage.

2024 Pantone Colour of The Year – Peach Fuzz

Now in its 25th year, Pantone Color of the Year introduces a new tone each year that is a trend forecast. Pantone Executive Director said “It is a Cosy Peach hue softly nestled between pink and orange, Peach Fuzz brings belonging, inspires recalibration, and an opportunity for nurturing,”

In seeking a hue that echoes our innate yearning for closeness and connection, we chose a colour radiant with warmth and modern elegance. A shade that resonates with compassion, offers a tactile embrace, and effortlessly bridges the youthful with the timeless.
– Leatrice Eiseman – Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute™

The trend for warmer tones is set to continue, our clients are getting braver and looking to experiment. We talked to our Wonderful Brands Education team and asked them for advice on how you could get inspiration from the Peach Fuzz Pantone Of The Year.

Katie Groves – ELEVEN Australia European Educator

The Pantone Colour of the Year is a fantastic tool to encourage creativity. It’s a great idea to take a look outside of our hair industry sometimes, to gather inspiration and to be aware of what will be all around us in 2024. Stylists can adapt this shade to suit their client’s needs quite easily. I encourage swatching to really understand how to tweak the shade. Adding a clear to your ELEVEN Australia Liquid Demi Permanent mix can help soften the shade’s intensity for those more subtle clients. Playing around with the depth can also have a huge impact.

Hayley Penny – Yellow Professional Educator

It’s all about placement. Adding dimensional lights or colour blocks. Or will you go for the impact of full head colour?

Peach fuzz works well as a temporary colour or going for a longer-lasting look. Discussing client commitment is key to deciding how you’ll add in this trend. Along with managing maintenance expectations. I think peach fuzz can complimentary to many skin tones. Place between orange and pink, try tipping to the more yellow, pink or orange side to suit your client’s complexion.

I’ll be adding copper tones to my level 10s and high lifts or offer diluted colour masks for those trying it out. Aftercare is essential. As well as protection from heat I’d advise a colour mask to keep the tones looking fresh. Yellow Professional Colour Refresh Mask in Shade .4 works beautifully for a peach shade when diluted with the colour care mask.

Ben Nott – ELEVEN Australia Brand Educator

I would pre-formulate a range of bespoke peach formulas on different bases and promote these unique-to-your-salon formulas to your clients. Most colourists already include toning within their blonding services, so there’s no need to add on any extra time to your packages either.

As with any pastel shade, the longevity is short. You could combat this by formulating slightly darker to start with and extend the life of the peach tone. Minimal heat styling, UV protection and colour-prolonging products are all paramount too in helping your client’s new peach tone last as long as possible. The maintenance necessary should be outlined at the earliest consultation too.

This is a great opportunity to boost retail sales too. Colour, heat and UV-protecting products will all extend the life of a new peach tone. Adding a peach-toned direct dye to a salon retail conditioner is a great revenue booster for the salon and a time saver for clients too.

Rachael Lomax – The Copper Queen – Yellow Professional Guest Artist

Peach Fuzz gives me inspiration and allows me to dive deep into the colours within the shade to create my own blend of copper tones and think outside the box.

Maintenance is key when working with coppers however correct product and oxydent choice will help when it comes to maintenance as working with coppers are complex you need to build the fundamentals. Home care maintenance is always a part of my client journey so products such as customised coloured shampoos and masks such as Yellow Professional Colour Care Masks are a game-changer, they will give longevity to your shades and give your clients the confidence to try something new and be able to make it last.

Who can wear this tone?

Katie Groves said “This beautiful shade is a winner for all complexions, due to its soft flattering hue. Your client may need to pop by for a top up to keep it looking fresh, which a fantastic chance to add a little treatment to their service. Remember, healthy hair will maintain their colour for longer!”

Rachael Lomax added

It’s key to assess your client’s skin tone and eye colour. However, this shade would work on most guests but would really suit pale pink skin tones on a lighter softer level or even richer tones, for more warmer skin tones you will have to adapt the shade by adding more violet or richer orange. This is why this tone is so versatile and could be adapted to match any skin tones.

To get a second-day look cocktail Matt Texture Spray ( this is matt and no shine and always contains beeswax which will give you more hold) with medium hold styling cream (medium hold and natural shine). You will get a beautiful sheen and separation on the hair.
  11. Short Hair Styling –
Traditional clays are hard and not easy to distribute through the hair, the ELEVEN Australia Extra Hold Clay is more creamy and easier to use. It has Lanoin and Beeswax. If you want more of a sheen cocktail with Smoot and finish, it makes it feel really silky and gives more separation

From Melbourne To Manchester

September saw ELEVEN Australia’s second edu-tainment event of the year in Manchester, where we brought a little of Melbourne sunshine to the North of England (it actually rained  but the sun shone inside 😉)

The event was held at the quirky Five Four Studios in Manchester, stylists were greeted with breakfast pastries before entering the bright white cove studio space, where the stylists received their red ELEVEN Australia goodie bags with the brand new Miracle Hair Treatment Shampoo and Conditioner as part of their £200 swag.

The event kicked off by Jo Robertson ELEVEN Australia UK Education Director, with an introduction to the brand and a little teaser of the next event in London with co-creative directors Joey Scandizzo and Andrew O’Toole. Melvin Royce Lane ELEVEN Australia’s Head Of Education and Brand Artists Paul Dennison were first to the stage. Melvin re-created the ELEVEN Australia signature seamless blonde using powder lighteners and ultra high-lift blonde cream colour, whilst Paul talked about real-life in-salon colour and how to change up your client’s colours quickly and keep them loyal to you and your salon.

Everyone was then treated to the Instagramable grazing platter lunch before seeing Jo Dyer ELEVEN Australia Guest Artist from YOKE The Salon in Plymouth dramatic haircut that had everyone in the audience holding their breath! Jo used the ELEVEN Australia Feather razor and took her model’s waist-length hair and transformed it into a cute Wolfe cut. Joining Jo was ELEVEN Australia Brand Ambassador Conor Doyle. Conor brought his unique and entertaining education to re-energise the room and talked about tackling curly hair with colour.

Next up is Sydney To Shoreditch on Tuesday 27th February with another superstar lineup
