Whether that’s knowing how to properly communicate with your clients online, knowing the right ways of finding your new dream clients, or even simply using and finding current trends. Because of this, we spoke to Social Media Coach Vivienne Johns, and asked her to share her top tips for growing your Instagram page are. Continue reading to get the full story…
There may be many reasons why you need to start an Instagram from Ground Zero. Maybe you got hacked and had to start all over again or moved to a new salon and felt like a new page knew you were on the cards or maybe you have never had an Instagram page before (insert shocked gasp here).
My name is Vivienne Johns and I am a social media coach for the hair and beauty industry. I have been helping hair and beauty professionals to grow their page, to get seen and get booked since 2019.
Salon Gold came to me and asked me to contribute towards their blog. When asked what they would like me to talk about, they replied “how to grow your page from scratch”.
These are my top tips to grow your Instagram page from Zero to Hero…
When starting a new page, I know the urge to just rush forward and start posting is strong.
Most people completely overlook their BIO, their name and their USERNAME, but these are vital parts of optimising your Instagram page to make you more easily found by your dream clients.
Instagram uses keywords. Just like SEO on your website to help its users find content that is relevant and interesting to them.
Use words that your clients would use when they are searching for you.
For example, we as hairdressers, may say “lived in blonde” but your clients say “Balayage”. I mean they have only just learned how to say it, so let’s use the words that they use.
The name field underneath your profile picture is also searchable. If your name is already in your Instagram handle, you do not need to use it again in the NAME FIELD. Instead, describe what you do and where you are based.
For example, “Balayage Expert Cornwall”.
Before you post your first piece of content to your brand-new page, work out who your dream client is.
Understanding who your dream client is will help you to know what they want to see, learn, read, and hear on your Instagram page.
When you know exactly who your dream client is you will know their most asked questions, you will understand their pain-points and you will understand what it is they are looking for from their stylist.
Every time you post a piece of content, imagine that you were sitting with your dream client, you are showing them the picture or video that you are about to post.
Imagine what questions your dream client asks you about that picture or video. Answer these questions in the captions.
This will make your dream client feel seen and heard when they view your content in their news feed.
The Instagram of 2022 is a very different place to how it used to be before the pandemic. Now people are looking for connections, they are looking for community.
Users of the platform are not satisfied with just looking at pretty pictures of hair anymore, your new audience wants to be educated, entertained, and included.
Think about how you can create content for your clients, think about what your clients are getting from it. Use your page to educate your clients about your products, your services and what makes you different from the salon down the road.

Ask questions and include your followers in the conversation. Ask questions that provoke conversation.
This will help you to establish relationships with your followers and potential new clients.
Use Stories to show your life behind the scenes. Stories can help you humanise your page.
They only last for 24 hours, so don’t need to be as edited or curated as the rest of your content.
Reels will help you increase your audience more quickly.
Using trending audio will help you to gain more reach, but don’t forget to use local hashtags to index your content and tell the algorithm exactly who to show your Reels to.
If the thought of talking to the camera fills you with dread, just know you are not alone.
No one likes the way the sound of their own voice. However, your clients don’t think the same.

Talk about something you are super passionate about.
We all have that one thing that everybody else in the salon will come to us to ask about. For me, that was anything to do with curly hair.
Think about it, what is this thing that everybody asks you about? This is your area of expertise. Otherwise, known as your niche.
Niching down into one area of expertise quickly establishes you as the expert in your field. It also makes posting to Instagram a lot easier.
Always talking about the same subject will create a strong and consistent message. Does it mean that you will never do any other type of hair? No, but you will see a lot more bookings for balayage come through for you.
With that said, you may be the best in the salon at clipper fades, but if you hate doing them, don’t make this your niche…. you will attract what you post.
Spending time scrolling through the news feed will not grow your page. Instead, head over to the hashtag page for your area.
You will find this in the magnifying glass at the bottom of the screen on your EXPLORE page as for your town, then scroll along the tabs at the top to TAGS. This is where you will find all the content that has used the hashtag from your town.
Spend time engaging with the content and creators you find on this page. This is where you will find your new dream clients.
So, there you have my top 10 tips on what to do if you are starting a page from scratch. But even if your page has been established for quite some time, these tips will help you too. For more social media tips and tricks from Viv head over to her website here – The Hairdressers Social Club
We have teamed up with Hayley Jepson – The Resilient Hairdresser to find out how you can stop yourself from Burning out in the hairdressing industry.
Hayley said “For hairdressers I feel burnout is always lurking, waiting for you to stop paying attention, so I think learning what self care you need and getting good with boundaries is something worth working on alongside your hair skills.”
Burnout is sadly common in our industry.
It is possible to get out of burnout by making changes and prioritising your mental and physical health.
Sometimes you need to say no to someone to say yes to yourself.
If you would like to learn more or book some time with Hayley head over to our Wonderful Brands Education Book or to Home – The Resilient Hairdresser
We know that your stockroom cupboard can be a daunting place, but that doesn’t always have to be the case. We spoke to some of our Wonderful Brand Educators about this subject and asked them to share their top tips and tricks for keeping their stockroom cupboard organised, tidy and filled with everything they could need to tackle whatever hair challenge walks through the salon door.
Firstly, we asked Vicki from the Wonderful Hair Shop, in Waterloovile, what colours are being asked for at the moment.
“As the seasons change our clients love to change their hair colour. We have found this Winter season that coppers have made a huge come back! From bright vibrant oranges to soft copper rose blondes.
My favourite combo for my bright orange is ELEVEN Australia Permanent COLOUR in 8.44 / 8.CC orange intense with 40 vol/12%. The 40 vol makes the orange pop. My favourite combo for the Orange rose is the ELEVEN Australia Liquid Demi COLOUR 19mls 1ml 6.66 using 2% on the roots going in to 4% I found that using the 4% on the ends really helps with the longevity of the demi liquid colour.
And this is why I need a full stock room of ELEVEN Australia!
I love all the natural ingredients with in the permanent and liquid colour with the added bonus of them also being in the Colour Activators and Cream Developers. The ELEVEN Colour is a luxury colour range starting with the Porosity Equaliser Spray and ending with the Colour Lock Spray. To insure that we never run out of stock for loose last minute colour changes we stock at least 3 colours going up to 8 for our favourites, this way there is no stock room drama and we are able to give our guests the perfect colour for their hair. You never know what is going to walk through the door so every plenty of stock is a must!”
Next, we spoke to Emma Simmons, from Salon 54. Read on to see what she had to say about her stockroom cupboard.
“Salon colour work is much more complicated as clients expectations and knowledge has increased over the years. It’s so important to keep fully stocked, we have a system in place to ensure we don’t ever run out of any shade. Being a busy colour salon, you never know what might crop up, especially when carrying out colour corrections, and not carrying plenty of every shade not only makes the task more difficult but also looks very unprofessional to the client.”

Lastly, we asked self-confessed colour geek, Charlotte Evans from Ginger, to share her colour tips.
“We see much more seasonal changes happening with clients wanting to add a little something different to most visits. We pride ourselves on being on top of trends and make sure all of our team are educated throughout the year allowing us to be confident to tackle any colour combo that could walk through our door. It’s all in the prep work from having a colour brand that you trust and allows you to create modern colours that your client’s notice the shine and condition to making sure the team are confident in what they do.”

We then asked Charlotte what makes her life easy. Continue reading to find out more.
“Eleven make it so much easier for the modern stylist, anything colour coded means I can work smarter and not harder,
while inhaling a packet of crisps and 10 cuppas for my dinner!”

What a weekend!
ELEVEN Australia has just spent the weekend at Salon International. If you did not manage to catch up with us a Salon International this weekend don’t fear we will share everything that you missed for this action-packed weekend.
This year ELEVEN Australia COLOUR was at the Hairdressers Journal Colour stage area for 3 days, sharing inspiration, colour formulas, techniques and our newly launched Permanent Colour.
Read more to discover who was on stage and learn about the beautiful colour work they produced.
Kicking off the weekend on the Saturday were our amazing ELEVEN Australia Educators Josh Lee, Zoe Rees and Pam Cooney.
First up was Josh Lee, an ELEVEN Australia Educator from Cardiff sharing his foilage technique and creating a beautiful lived-in blonde using 9 Levels Lightener with 6% / 20 Vol and toned with 9VM / 9.35 + 2% activator.

Next up was Zoe Rees ELEVEN Australia Educator from Bliss Hair Therapy Birmingham who created the most beautiful blonde without using a lightener.
This soft, beige blonde was created using our NEW Ultra High Lift Blonde in the ELEVEN Australia Permanent range – 11.20 / 11.VA + 30 Vol / 9%. Zoe also added in some foils for depth using 7NG / 7.03 + 2% in the liquid Demi Permanent range. There was no root tap or toner used to create the look. Zoe added that sometimes as colourists we are far too quick to reach for the powder lighter, using the ELEVEN Australia Ultra High Lift blondes you can achieve the results and it is a really nice alternative to lift and tone.

The final ELEVEN Australia Educator of the day was Pam Cooney from Clay Salon in Birmingham, Pam stole the afternoon at the show with this breathtaking Copper using the ELEVEN Australia Permanent range. The kaleidoscope of copper seamlessly blended into beautiful pale butterscotch which revealed hidden copper gems as it moved.

Pam started the process by mapping out her colour placement by analysing the natural base and sectioning the hair to allow her to transition from one tone to another easily.
Global root application 6.4 / 6.C & 6% 20 Vol
Colour blocking in the nape of the neck, 6.4 / 6C + 6% /20 Vol
Ocipital Bone to below the crown 6.4 / 6C + Orange Concentrate + 6% / 20 vol
Crown 6.4 / 6C + Gold Concentrate + 6% / 20 Vol
Top of the head 7.44 / 7CC + Orange concentrate + 9% / 30 Vol
FaceFrame 8.56 / 8.MR + 9.34 / 9.GC + 12Vol / 40 Vol
Traditionally THE day at salon International! We were ready with a fantastic line-up of Educators and Guest Artists. Joining us on the pod to share her wisdom with the visitors was Katie Groves, our first ELEVEN Australia educator and all-around colour guru.
Sharing their inspiration first was Douglas Reid from R&R Southport, who really does not need an introduction, Dougie has been educating for the brand for 1 year now and consistently shared his inspiration and colour formulas on social media. Dougie’s first model was a beautiful Aussie-inspired blonde using the Ultra High Lift Blondes. Dougie wanted to create a try lived-in blonde that looked like his model had his hair naturally lightened by the sun and salt water of Australia.
His Formula was 11.VA / 11.21 + 12% / 40Vol

Dougie’s second look was far from a lived-in Blonde, this look was inspired by the ELEVEN Australia cutting collection – Undertone which Dougie cut before the show. The hair was pre-lightened using 7 Levels of Lift global application + 6% / 20 Vol and Glossed using the Demi-Permanent Liquid colours 10 VA / 10. 21 & 9. AA / 9.11 + 4% / 13 Vol. Using a very careful and slightly nerve-racking tipping technique LIVE at salon international he tipped with 1.N / 1.0 + 3% / 10 Vol. This certainly was a crowd puller and had everyone holding their breath whilst is was being rinsed off!

Our first guest artist was Charlotte Roberts from Layered Collective on the Wirral. Charlotte shared an alternative to a balayage with a brunette, she shared that her model constantly struggles with the unwanted warmth when getting her hair coloured and that the Liquid Demi Permanent range was the perfect colour as she was able to control the undercoat using the 2% activator and using the newly launched 6MT & 6A to control the top and top and used the 4GM / 4.35 on the underneath sections to add the chocolate tones. Late on in the day, Charlotte created a second look using our 9 levels lightener + 6% / 20 Vol with her go-to face frame section technique.

We were super excited to have the amazing Emma Simmons on our pod as a guest artist the weekend. Emma is a BHA finalist for North-Eastern Hairdresser of the Year and brought 3 of her wigs from her collection to the show which were coloured with ELEVEN Australia permanent COLOUR, which was showcased on the Colour Pod and also on stage during her presentation.
Emma’s first model, Ethan was 11 VN + 12% and triangular sections of 11VA + 12% to create a natural blonde without using lightener.
Her second model Grace who also featured in Emma’s collection was a more technical colour placement
Foils – 20g 9VM + 1g 6RR & 8V and 8A equal parts. With a global application 1 part 5VV and 2 parts 5AA + 8 parts clear with 2%

This is an exciting day at Salon International as it welcomes thousands of students through the doors as well as salons and stylists. It is great to get the opportunity to inspire the future of our industry.
First up on the Colour pod was Ben Nott who wowed us with his perfect Foilage technique and tip out showing how to overcome the dreaded box dye situation.

He first added in a face-frame technique with a mixture of small and chunky weaves with 7 Levels of Lift powder lightener + 10 Vol / 3% with a freehand tip out and freehand balayage using the 6 Levels lay Powder lightener + a scoup of 9 Levels Powder Lightener to boost the lifting capabilities 3:1 + 12% / 40 Vol. Ben had all the visitors watching swooning over his beautiful placement and his perfectionism.
He later transformed the same model using the new ELEVEN Australia Permanent colour, he used around the hairline/face frame – Root 6.43 / 6.CG + 7.44 . 7.CC + 6% / 20 Vol and glosses the ends with 9.33 /9GG + 9.4 / 9.C + 4% / 13 Vol the rest of the hair – roots 6.43 + 7.44 and glossed with 7CC + 9CC + 4% / 13 Vol.

The incredibly talented Annabelle Arnold was in the hot seat next with her first model. Coming from a sizzling summer where bright blondes were the must-have colour of the season and now transitioning to a more muted blonde, Annabelle showed how to easily transform your bright blondes to a more Autumn palette without them feeling too dark.
First Annabelle applied a root colour using the Liquid demi Permanent range 2/3 7GM/ 7.35 + 1/3 6MT / 6.7 + 2%, then lowlighted with ½ 8GA / 8.31 + ½ 7. GM / 7.35 + 4%. Glossed with 2/3 10GA / 10.31 + 1/3 10G + 10GM / 10.35 +2%.

Mixing it up with her second model Annabelle wanted to show how to add colour to her model subtly. His natural base was a level 5 and did not want to look blonde, the desired result was to look like he had been surfing this summer and to add a natural sun-kissed effect. Annabelle applied scattered foils with a concentration at the front to create the sun-kissed effect and used 8.GR / 8.36 + 12% 40Vol.

Read on to find out some of our amazing tips and tricks on how to sell ELEVEN Australia X Viscaya Wagner Holiday 2022 through in your salon…
Every year parents buy gifts for teachers at their kids nursery and school, why not suggest they buy an Eleven Australia Bon Bon or Trio Pack instead of the standard wine and chocolates!
Stylists should ask clients if they have Christmas gifts to buy, naturally the answer will be ‘yes’ which gives them the opportunity to suggest the Eleven Australia Trio Packs, Bon Bons or maybe a Limited Edition Rose Gold Miracle Hair Treatment.
Use the front desk to create an impulse purchase area, hang Christmas stockings and fill with Eleven Australia products. Stack packs and Bon Bons for instant impact. Use a chalkboard to make the display stand out and highlight the price.

Be sure to ask your clients if they are involved in a Secret Santa or Kris Kringle this year. Most people are involved in at least one and will have a budget for the gift they have to buy. Whether the budget is £10 or £50 you have them covered with an Eleven Australia!
Incentivise your team to sell Christmas packs! For every pack the team member sells they get a ticket and write their name on it, the tickets are collected in a box and once all the packs are sold you draw 3 tickets out of the box and award the prizes to lucky winners.
The more packs they sell leads to more tickets which gives them more chances of winning a prize! You could also do 2 tickets for a trio pack and one for any other ELEVEN product. Ask your rep about incentive prize ideas.
Incentivise your clients to purchase packs! Create 2 seperate prizes, this could be one major prize and one minor prize e.g. full hair makeover as major prize and wash and blow dry with apprentice as minor prize. This could also be restricted so it doesn’t impact on your busy trading times e.g. redeemable Monday to Thursday before 5pm. When a client buys a pack they get a ticket and write their name on it and the tickets are collected in a box. The tickets are drawn and prize winners announced before the salon closes for Christmas.
Consider a value add promotion such as purchase 3 Eleven Australia trio packs and receive 1 Bon Bon FREE or maybe a FREE salon treatment! Maybe include a salon gift voucher in each pack to gain new clients in the new year.

Create a full, sensory experience in the salon to boost Christmas pack sales. Push the ‘CHRISTMAS’ theme across all areas of the salon e.g. offer seasonal drinks, get that Christmas playlist going (personally we love a reggae Christmas song – listen to our Spotify playlist here), burn candles that have a festive fragrance.
Literally add the sense of holiday wherever possible in the salon and with the focal point being the Eleven Australia Holiday pack display everything will make sense! Use social media to promote the holistic experience you have created by pushing a tag line like: Your Christmas starts at ‘SALON NAME’.
Hide a ‘golden ticket’ in one (or more) of the Eleven Australia holiday packs, the ticket would entitle the client to a prize of some sort. We recommend doing a value add prize such as ‘Get a blow dry at SALON NAME and receive a complimentary Eleven Australia in salon treatment’.
This would encourage clients to purchase more holiday packs and could potentially generate new business if someone receives a holiday pack with a golden ticket as a gift!
If you have a salon software programme where you can access each clients purchase history you can be prepared with the best holiday packs for that client e.g. Sarah is booked in for her usual cut and colour and she has purchased Eleven Australia Smooth Me Now shampoo and conditioner in her last few visits, the stylist should have the Smooth Trio at the station to show it to Sarah when she comes in. This shows your client that you know what they like and have taken the time to set it aside for them, the client feels valued that you have thought about them before they have arrived in the salon.
Encourage clients to share photos of themselves with the Eleven Australia holiday packs and tag the salon, e.g. a picture of them with their fresh hair and ELEVEN Australia Trio pack.
Have a prize for the best photo, it could be an Eleven Australia brush or product of their choice. User generated content makes the person feel like they are part of something and supports word of mouth marketing.
